Streams in the Desert

These are challenging times. The weekend may have brought us a temporary reprieve from the financial mess but unless we make some significant changes to what we believe and how we behave nothing will change. Here are some real changes that we need:

To realize that you have only one entitlement in life; you are entitled to serve others.
To understand that there is no such thing as free (lunch, health care, education, housing, or investments); someone pays, and it is usually you.
To embrace the universal law that to be successful in life and business you must pay the full price for it, and pay it in advance.
We need to radically embrace high standards of dress, conduct, behavior, and performance in our school systems. We do not need to reform our education system. We need to close it down and start over with a revolution in principles and practices.
We need to radically embrace high standards of dress, conduct, behavior, and performance in our business systems. Business needs to stop its self-serving behavior and remember that you exist to be useful to your customers and clients. The culture and titans of Wall Street existed to make money for themselves alone. That's the problem. They deserve what they get. What you sow is what you reap. Remember that.
You are fully responsible for your own happiness in life. It's not the economy, the company, the government, or even God that is responsible for that state of being. It's you.

I often say, "As I get older there are fewer and fewer things that I know for sure, but I am more sure of the few that I am."

Here is the key one. All of us need to be a POW – a Person of Wisdom. Right now your career and your business is at stake. I challenge you to make a commitment right now to do some soul work, become one of the 3% who live on purpose, and seek to grow in wisdom, personal strength, and in partnership with your creator and with others.

I welcome "the crisis" as an opportunity for those willing to pay the price to become wise. For them it will be okay. What do you think?

On Sept 21, 1969, my wonderful daughter Amy was welcomed into the world by two young people who probably were not ready for parenthood. But when are you? She has been the light of life for me. One of the wise things my daughter said is the quote above. She was talking about a young man who was seeking to have a serious relationship. He was nice and a handsome lad. But she wasn’t interested. I expressed some curiosity and that’s when she told me,
“Dad, when it comes to (Name)

… What you see is all you get!

” It turns out, that for many people and things these days, that is one of the great truths of life.

AIDDA is a great speech making formula.

This is week three in a series of short ideas on how to make a great speech. Learn how to use the AIDDA formula. The AIDDA formula is an acronym for how you write a great commercial for the media. I use it all the time when I do radio programs and write commercial copy for clients. Here is the open secret. Every good speech or sales presentation that is intended to get people to take action should consider using this five-step formula. Here we go.

A – Attention

- you have to get their attention right away.

I – Interest

- you have to keep them interested and engaged.

D – Desire

- you have to paint an emotional word story picture of
something very desirable.

D – Decision

- you tell them the decisions and choices to make.

A – Action

- you have to call for and describe the` action to take.

When Making A Speech
It’s How They Feel That’s Important

This is the second in some thoughts on making great speeches.

I have been involved with radio off and on all of my life. As a small boy when I visited Grandma's house in the summer I was thrilled to be able to stay up late and listen to the big console radio with the gleaming green eye tuner, and hear Radio Moscow, BBC London, Voice of America, Radio Peking, and many others.

When I could I would love to listen to WGN Radio from Chicago and hear the late night music and musings of an incredible announcer named Franklyn McCormack. On his program at 1AM he did what he called "The Torchlight Hour." There he would share philosophy, read poetry, and play beautiful music. He was an awesome talent. He died on air at the microphone. Years later when I was in international mission radio I did a late night program called Caribbean Night Call. It was a sincere but feeble attempt to imitate the master.

Now to the point, and something to remember about your speech making. I often had people come up to me and say, 'I heard you on the radio. It was great." I was pleased and would often ask them what program they had heard. I don't do that anymore. Unfortunately most people were then embarrassed because they really could not remember the details of the program.

But they said that they had really liked it. It made them feel good. So remember that when you do a speech. It may not be what you say or what the audience remembers that is important. It's how they felt, and whether it gave them hope, that is important.

As I often said on those radio programs, "Just let that sit on your head for awhile."

I Dislike PowerPoints and Teleprompters

The now famous speech of Sarah Palin, according to now conflicting reports, had teleprompter difficulties. Correct or not, when that news came out one of my friends called and with a chuckle in her voice repeated the story and said, “of course I thought of you.”

She was referring to one of my often shared private observations, “I can’t stand teleprompters and PowerPoints.” I will now go public with that, but as with most of my coaching comments and observations I add, “They don’t work for me, but if they work for you, good for you.”

If you want to be a powerful speaker, don’t use PowerPoints. As my good friend Kris Porter said to me after hearing my keynote speech without a PowerPoint, “Good for you for not using PowerPoint, because when you use PowerPoint, you give away

your

power.” Think about that. What do you think Kris meant by that?

Let me tell you another story. I was the second speaker at a small conference. The first speaker showed up ready to do their program with their seventy plus PowerPoint slides. The technology failed, the presentation was a bomb, and the speaker humbled and a bit humiliated. It was sad.

Some Labor Day Thoughts

I seek to keep my public and professional writing and broadcasting free of political discourse and discussion along partisan lines. That’s not fully possible of course, but I make a good faith effort. Politics is neither my calling nor passion. I believe that political solutions are illusions. No matter who wins, eight years from now things will be about the same as they are now. Just as things are about the same now as they were eight years ago.

To put your hopes for a better life and world into a political person, program, or party is not a wise thing to do! That is my belief and my disclaimer for the following.

As a communicator and marketer, I believe announcing the choice of Sarah Palin on the Friday morning after Barack Obama’s successful acceptance speech the night before, was a masterstroke. Here is my point. I have been telling people for the last eight months that I know who will win the election. Ultimately elections are not about issues. Issues change all the time. The winner will be the candidate with the best story; and the one who tells and lives that story well. Success in the political arena boils down to enhancing your story while you diminish the story of your opponent. In the next 60 days we will discover who has the best story.

This is an ongoing challenge I give to many, and I take it to heart too. Take a subject, and then seek to bring greater clarity to that subject for you, your colleagues, your customers; your listeners or readers, and limit yourself to ten minutes. That is what I try to do in the radio program on our five great fears; ten minutes of clarity.

Obviously 500 pages could be written on our fears, but can you bring ten minutes of greater clarity to your subject and to your audience. And, on rare occasions you get it in less than 10 words.

I am admirer of the radio programs and written work of Dennis Prager. One day I heard the above quote. There you have a great, under ten word, statement of truth. In my upcoming book that deals with pain and its place in our life, this quote crystallized a great truth. Think about it and tell me your feelings on, “If pain were water the world would drown.”

Let God get on with it!

I was reminded of it when I saw one of those clever cartoons in the Wall Street Journal. The man is in the childhood pose of saying his prayers by his bed and says, “Now I lay me down to fret.”

There is an incredible amount of fretting around today. Many business leaders indicated to me that June and July were difficult; business down, and customers and clients slow to commit.

The perfect storm of oil prices, a credit crunch, and mortgage company and financial institution losses have the market bears growling, and volatility continues. The political battles are continuing and international conflicts are unnerving. My investment guru and guide, Dr. George Olander of Arizona State University knows this stuff better than most, and has been right on in most scenarios, confesses that he just does not have any clear prediction and point of action.

We may not technically be in recession but we are in a “fret-session.” I feel that too from time to time. But here is the wisdom that is vital to remember. Real opportunities in life and business are usually to be found in the midst of obstacles, crises, and difficulties. Instead of fretting, start looking. Grab a pen and paper and start writing down some possible opportunities for you and your business. One thinker says that true opportunities are only to be found in times of difficulties. What do you think.

A couple of days ago I was walking to the training pool here in Beijing and I saw my former coach Larry Liebowitz. Our first handshake here at the Olympics was one of the true highlights of the trip so far. Larry was my coach when I was a young swimmer in Santa Barbara back in 1993, and it was at that critical time in my life that Larry and I forged a life-long relationship. I can attribute a good portion of my success in this sport to Larry

The Olympics are on, a war in the Caucasus may be on, the election is getting hot, and the state of the economy is up for anyone’s prediction.
We live in difficult and dangerous times. One person in the midst of this said to me the other day, “Oh I just wish things would get back to normal.” I have news for you … This is normal. This is the way the world is; and we all must respond by getting back to work, being of use to someone, making someone’s life easier, and performing in a way that makes a difference and perhaps helps someone make money!

In order to perform at our best, we need help; a guide and a coach. I was gratified to see that Mark Warkentien, a swimmer in the Olympics who is keeping a blog took time to go through the list of his coaches and how they have helped him. That caused me to think …

In my upcoming book on coaching I talk about some of the coaches, guides, and mentors that have made a difference in my life. Why don’t you take time today to make a list of the coaches that have helped you? They may not be formal coaches; but by their example, teaching, guiding, supervising, etc. (you get the idea) they have helped you.

Then why don’t you take some time to thank them and tell others about them. And if you would like to make a greater impact on your work and world today, perhaps you need a coach. Could I talk to you about that? We all need a coach or coaches in our life!

Some clarity on technology …

For me it has been one of those weeks where you curse technology. It truly is a love- hate relationship isn’t it? When servers and vendors and computers all conspire, at least it seems, to have troubles that take precious time, talent, and money; you wish they were not there. But when you realize how vital and much more productive you can be with all of that technical stuff, then you are better; until the next time.

However,

just some clarity that came to me in my musings on computers, technology, and the digital revolution; and I share it with you!

Remember that technology is never a competitive edge. Peter Drucker is right. All technology is moronic. All things technical have no wisdom, intelligence, courage, or compassion. You can cultivate that advantage. The difference is always you! So market you!

E mails are a lousy way to communicate anything of importance. If it is important it must be heard.

Technology does not increase our ability to have quality relationships, demonstrate our authenticity, or communicate vitality.

He’s Happy and other Good Stuff

His name is Paul

and he’s happy.

His life has not been easy. There have been many difficulties and disappointments. That is also true for many others. But unlike many who go through deep difficulty, Paul’s faith remained strong, he worked on the issues in life, sought wise counsel and good friends, took risks, pursued his purposes and pressed on! Today Paul is doing well and is one of the premier thinkers and practitioners in how to build business affiliations that are mutually profitable for all.

But here is one of the things I really love about Paul, his happy smile. When you meet Paul and say the standard greeting, “how are you?” Rather than the usual, I’m fine (good) (well)…etc.,

Paul says, “I’m happy!”

Inevitably people are taken back by that and don’t know quite how to respond. Try it yourself this week. Paul really is happy and more and more he says to me, “Stan, you were right; a lot of good things just come to me.” Happy Paul often goes to professional meetings that many just blow off. Inevitably he says, “If you show up, good things happen.” So start being and saying, “I’m happy” and see what happens to you!

WOW websites, and speak like a DJ! – and some shameless Stan self-promotion.

Increasingly I have had a number of clients ask, “Stan what should I put on my web site that is not just more boring stuff? How can I make my web site be WOW? I gave that a lot of marketing and communication thought and I have some answers. There are three things you should have, and if you would like to know what they are you will have to call and ask. Remember when you do your website, speak like a DJ. You can ask me about that too.
